Two types of cardboard waste
Along with plastic, cardboard is a main type of packaging waste produced by business and industry.
Cardboard is made from wood fibre. Cardboard waste can be easily gathered into bales and broken down for producing new cardboard by pulping the fibres in water and reforming.
Not all types of different cardboard waste can be recycled together.
There are two main types of cardboard waste:
– typically a light brown colour used for packing boxes, produced with a wave -shaped inner layer of cardboard between two outer layer sheets, designed for increased thickness and durability
- a single layer of grey-coloured cardboard used for items such as cereal boxes and shoe boxes. Paperboard can be torn more easily than corrugated cardboard.
Corrugated cardboard should be recycled separately from single sheet cardboard and paper, and cardboard containing difficult to separate recycle plastics and other materials.
