Fridge and Freezer refrigerants
Every fridge freezer contains 'refrigerants' - a chemical used to carry heat, which changes from gas to liquid, and then back again to gas in the refrigeration cycle.
In the 1980s, most common refrigerants included chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as:
- R-22 Chlorofluorocarbons
- R-134A Tetrafluoroethane
- R-438A Freon
It was the discovery that CFCs were causing major damage to the ozone layer protecting the earth from ultra-violet radiation that led to their phasing out from 1989 onwards.
The main refrigerant now used is R-600a, or isobutane - a colourless, odourless gas - which has a smaller effect on the atmosphere if accidentally released.
Modern refrigerators also usually contain refrigerant HFC-134a, which also has a reduced impact upon the ozone layer. The use of R-134a is now increasingly rare.
Fridges and Freezers are classified as hazardous waste
However, fridges and freezers are classified as hazardous waste under WEEE regulations, which were revised and came into law in 2014.
WEEE stands for Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Large household appliances such as, fridges, freezers, washing machines and ovens currently account for over 40 per cent of items collected and recycled under the WEEE regulations (Health & Safety Executive - HSE).

Flytipping of fridges, freezers and other white goods
Of some 957,000 flytipping incidents reported in the UK by DEFRA during 2018, nearly 47,000 incidents involved white goods, such as fridges, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers, according to AO-World. London alone, recorded more than 9,000 cases of flytipped white goods.
Flytipping of fridges and freezers is, alarmingly, on the rise - with an increased risk to the environment caused by the release of harmful refrigerants.
Attempts by councils and local authorities to provide a paid collection service of discarded fridges and freezers, and other large white goods can cause unexpected issues.
Removed by opportunists and illegally dumped
Householders can be often asked by a council to leave broken or unwanted appliances outside their property for collection.
Unfortunately, the items can all too often be removed by opportunists and eventually, illegally dumped.
That's why it's essential to always use a registered waste carrier license for a safe and responsible fridge freezer removal and disposal.
Penalty fines of up to £400 can be incurred for using an unlicensed waste carrier found to have flytipped your fridge, freezer or any other waste and rubbish collection.
