What is Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous waste substances can be a by-product of a process or activity, which a business has a duty of care to ensure that it’s handled, stored and disposed of safely and correctly.

Hazardous waste can be present on-site in many industrial and manufacturing workplaces.

Obvious examples include:

·        Liquids

·        Solvents

·        Cleaners

·        Adhesives

·        Paints

·        Oils

·        Industrial chemicals

·        Gases

·        Sludges

·        Empty containers

A hazardous waste substance can also be more commonly found in a variety of business and home environments, including:

·        Print toner

·        Aerosols

·        Cleaning chemicals

·        Fridges and Freezers

·        Batteries

·        Fluorescent tubes

Hazardous waste is a potential safety risk to human health and the environment, and must always be handled in a safe and controlled way.

What are the 4 Types of Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous waste is generally classified into FOUR distinct types:

·        Toxic  - or poisonous

·        Corrosive  -  causes rust or decomposition

·        Flammable – causes combustion and fire

·        Explosive – or reactive

Toxic  - or poisonous

Toxicity is determined by many characteristics. Poisonous substances and materials are not only an immediate threat to human health but can have long term consequences for the environment and the contamination of groundwater.

Corrosive -  causes rust or decomposition

A corrosive is a liquid substance that can attack and cause irreversible damage to many materials, including human tissue, plastics and metals.

Corrosive substances are defined by the capability to eat through their containers and cause leakage such as:

·        Hydrochloric acid

·        Nitric acid

·        Sulphuric acid

·        Battery acid

·        Rust removers

Flammable– causes combustion and fire

There are THREE types of flammable substances:

Liquids - with a low flash point such as alcohol, gasoline and acetone.

Compressed gasses and oxidisers -  which readily react with no energy input.

Solids  - which spontaneously combust.

Explosive – or reactive

Explosive wastes are unstable under normal conditions, and can ‘ignite’ at relatively low temperatures. When heated, compressed, or mixed with water they react violently to cause explosions, toxic fumes, gases, or vapours.

Asbestos Waste Collection

Following a survey confirmation that asbestos waste is present, an officially authorised asbestos waste removal must take place under strictly controlled conditions using statutory personal protection equipment (PPE) and sealed containment measures.

Common examples of waste asbestos include:

·        Corrugated garage roofing

·        Asbestos Insulation Board (AIB)

·        Suspended ceiling tiles

·        Artex ceilings

·        Bonded floor tiles

·        Fascias, soffits, pipes

How Do You Dispose of Hazardous Waste?

Disposing of hazardous waste substances requires a properly controlled and safe waste management solution.

Hazardous waste collection should be specifically designed to handle the very different types of hazardous waste and carried out without endangering the environment or human health.

Separated from other types of waste items, hazardous waste should be safely and securely transported to special disposal facilities.

Hazardous waste disposal facilities are purpose-built to permanently contain hazardous waste and prevent the release of harmful contaminants and pollutants into the environment.

The most common measures for hazardous waste disposal is transference to a land disposal unit such as a landfill or land treatment unit.
